JERU THE DAMAJA od początku swojej kariery był mocno związany z grupą Gang Starr (Guru, DJ Premier) i był częstym gościem na ich płytach. Jego dwa pierwsze albumy w całości wyprodukował sam DJ Premier, który z całą pewnością jest najbardziej wpływowym producentem w historii rapu. Jeru należał do legendarnego składu Crooklyn Dodgers powołanego na potrzeby soundtrack’u do filmu Spike’a Lee “Clockers” (obok Jeru do składu należeli również: Masta Ace, Q-Tip (Tribe Called Quest), O.C. czy Buckshot). Twórczość Jeru można zaklasyfikować do świadomego rapu – jego teksty są przepełnione przekazem wiedzy i pozytywnych wartości. Poglądy Jeru bywają też kontrowersyjne, co doprowadziło do małego “beef’u” z grupą “The Fugees”, których zaczepkę w stronę Jeru można usłyszeć na albumie “The Score”. Wytwórnie Death Row oraz Bad Boy również nie były zadowolone z zarzutów Jeru o ich komercjalizacji. Od 2007 Jeru miał przerwę w muzycznych wydawnictwach, z wyjątkiem nagranego w Polsce utworu z Slums Attack (Peja, DJ Decks) i z O.S.T.R. Na trasie, oprócz starszych klasyków, będzie można usłyszeć utwory promujący najnowszy album Jeru “The Hammer”.
